On 17th May 2025, Mum Cheptoo Foundation (MCF) reached an important milestone with its inaugural community outreach at Kimugul Comprehensive School. What began as a vision to honor a mother’s legacy of compassion, generosity, and care came to life as a day of learning, dignity, and meaningful connection—impacting over 200 pupils, alongside teachers and the wider school community.
This outreach was more than a first event. It was the moment where legacy met action.
The idea was born from a simple yet powerful question: How do we turn a legacy of kindness into practical support for today’s learners? MCF was founded on the belief that empathy, service, and care should be lived values. The Kimugul outreach was designed to ensure that learners—especially those navigating sensitive life transitions—felt supported, confident, and seen.
Creating Safe Spaces for Honest Conversations
One of the most impactful moments of the day was the open dialogue on menstrual health. For many learners, this was the first time they had participated in a respectful, safe conversation where questions were encouraged, myths were addressed, and experiences were shared without fear or judgment.
The session emphasized a crucial message: menstruation is a natural part of life—not something to fear, hide, or feel ashamed of. As learners asked questions and shared openly, confidence visibly grew. The discussion highlighted the importance of safe spaces within schools—spaces where health, dignity, and emotional wellbeing are prioritized.
“I used to feel scared to talk about my period. Today I felt confident asking questions and learning how to manage it safely.”
— Learner, Upper Primary

Practical Support That Makes a Difference
Beyond conversation, the outreach focused on practical dignity. Learners received menstrual health supplies, reusable water bottles, and clear guidance on proper hygiene and usage. By pairing education with tangible resources, MCF ensured that learners were equipped not just with knowledge—but with tools to manage their health confidently and consistently.
Teachers observed a noticeable shift in engagement and understanding.
“Providing supplies and guidance is important, but seeing learners confidently ask questions shows real change is happening.”
— Teacher, Kimugul Comprehensive School
The Legacy Behind the Mission
The Kimugul outreach was deeply personal. Mum Cheptoo Foundation was established to honor a mother whose life was defined by quiet generosity, compassion, and service to others. That legacy shaped every aspect of the outreach—from the emphasis on dignity and empathy to the commitment to long-term impact.
This event demonstrated that compassion is most powerful when transformed into action—when values are lived, not just remembered.

Environmental Responsibility and SDG Action
MCF also integrated environmental stewardship into the outreach, aligning with key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Learners participated in tree planting around the school compound, supporting SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
The activity was paired with age-appropriate lessons on environmental responsibility—how trees improve air quality, provide shade, and create healthier learning spaces. The distribution of reusable water bottles further reinforced SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) by encouraging reduced reliance on single-use plastics.
“Planting trees made me feel like I’m helping my school and community. I want to see them grow and remember today.”
— Learner, Junior Secondary
A Visible Shift in Confidence
By the end of the day, there was a clear transformation among learners. Topics that once caused embarrassment or fear had become opportunities for learning, empowerment, and self-expression.
School administrators noted the impact extended beyond the session itself.
“It’s amazing to see how learners speak up now. They are confident and informed, and that confidence will last beyond today.”
— School Administrator
Honoring a Legacy Through Action
The Kimugul outreach was more than an event—it was a living tribute. Every question asked, every supply distributed, every tree planted, and every learner engaged reflected MCF’s commitment to care, dignity, and community empowerment.
This inaugural outreach showed how a personal legacy can inspire sustainable, real-world change.
Looking Ahead
MCF’s first outreach reaffirmed a powerful truth: intentional action rooted in compassion can transform communities. Kimugul Comprehensive School will always hold a special place in the Foundation’s journey—the place where vision, legacy, and action came together to impact over 200 learners directly and many more indirectly.
This is only the beginning.
The Mum Cheptoo Foundation is committed to reaching more schools, empowering more learners, and nurturing communities where dignity, knowledge, and opportunity are accessible to all.
