At Mum Cheptoo Foundation (MCF), community well-being and environmental responsibility go hand in hand. During our inaugural outreach at Kimugul Comprehensive School, we took intentional steps to promote not only health and dignity but also environmental stewardship—through the distribution of reusable water bottles and the planting of trees within the school compound.
These actions may appear simple, but their impact is long-lasting, embedding lessons that extend far beyond the classroom.
Promoting Healthy Hydration and Sustainable Habits
Access to safe drinking water is essential for learning, concentration, and overall well-being. By providing reusable, recyclable water bottles, MCF encouraged learners to stay hydrated while reducing dependence on single-use plastic bottles.
This initiative supports:
- Healthy daily habits that improve focus and learning outcomes
- Reduced plastic waste within school environments
- Early awareness of sustainable consumption practices
“The water bottles will help our learners carry water from home and reduce litter in school. It also teaches them responsibility for the environment.”
— Teacher, Kimugul Comprehensive School
Relevant Sustainable Development Goals

- SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Promoting healthy habits through proper hydration
- SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: Encouraging reuse and reducing plastic waste
Planting Trees: Investing in the Future
Tree planting formed both a symbolic and practical part of the Kimugul outreach. Learners, teachers, and MCF volunteers worked together to plant trees within the school compound—transforming the activity into a hands-on lesson in environmental care, ownership, and responsibility.
Trees play a vital role in:
- Improving air quality
- Providing shade and creating conducive learning environments
- Combating climate change and supporting biodiversity
“Planting a tree made us feel like we are protecting our school and our future.”
— Learner, Upper Primary
Relevant Sustainable Development Goals
- SDG 13 – Climate Action: Taking local action to address climate change
- SDG 15 – Life on Land: Protecting and restoring ecosystems through tree planting
Learning Beyond the Classroom
By actively involving learners, the tree planting went beyond environmental action—it became experiential learning. Students were taught how to care for the trees and why nurturing them to maturity matters, reinforcing long-term responsibility rather than one-day participation.
“When children plant trees themselves, they develop a sense of ownership. They will protect them.”
— School Administrator

A Holistic Approach to Community Development
MCF’s work at Kimugul reflects a holistic approach to development—one that recognizes the strong link between health, education, and environmental sustainability. When learners grow in healthy, supportive environments, communities become stronger and more resilient.
Through initiatives that merge wellbeing, environmental stewardship, and empowerment, MCF helps young people understand that caring for themselves, their school, and their environment are interconnected responsibilities.
Looking Ahead
The trees planted at Kimugul will continue to grow, just as the lessons learned will continue to shape young minds. Through simple yet intentional actions, the Mum Cheptoo Foundation is nurturing a generation that values health, responsibility, and environmental care.
